The history of Haiti music can be traced many years back; the Haiti music has gradually evolved over time to its present form. Haitian Kompa is the national music that people have been dancing and singing since the 1800s. Compas direct is the same Haiti music referred to as Kompa in Haitian Creole. Compas is also most famous music among the Caribbean countries neighbouring Haiti. Compas is a Spanish name that means beat or rhythm and just as the name suggest, one of the common feature of this Haitian music is the consistent beat of the Tambora drum. Compas is very easy and quite fun to dance to and dancers are propelled around the floor with lively and active beats.

Vodou music is also a very famous genre of the Caribbean music mainly in Haiti. Vodou was an ancient spiritual cult that had been initiated by the enslaved Africans in Haiti. Vodou Haitian music, involved chanting to appease various spirits which were believed to serve various purposes. In the current period though Haitians are mainly Roman Catholics, some still hold strongly to the ancient spiritual beliefs thus the popularity of Vodou music as referred to as Vodun.
